Mike Tyson and Roy Jones Jr, two of boxing’s biggest stars, collide for an exhibition match on Saturday, November 28th, at 9 pm EST. The fight will be available to purchase on pay-per-view (PPV) and streamed live from the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

“I’m back”; two words was all Tyson needed to announce his return via Instagram in a video reminding us why he was considered ‘the baddest’. After months of teasing fans with his flawless and devastating padwork, he finally released the news back in May 2020. He was once the king and undisputed heavyweight champion of the world. Now in his 50s, he is showing signs of his former glory.

Roy Jones Jr. is a legend in his own right as a four-division world champion himself and considered by many to be one of the best pound-for-pound boxers of all time. Also in his 50’s and coming out of retirement for the bout, Jones Jr. was an Olympic boxer before turning pro and becoming the undisputed light heavyweight champion in the late 90s.

Tyson’s knockout power is prodigious, winning his first 19 pro fights by knockout. His hooks to the body are notoriously savage and can drop an opponent in seconds. Jones, on the contrary, is renowned for his speed and athleticism, winning all but one of his first fifty professional fights. His strength lies in his showmanship and unpredictability; he can equally be light and evasive on his feet or aggressively looking for a knockout.

Both men led illustrious careers at their peak, and some of that prowess clearly remains today if their sparring and training videos are anything to go by. The power and speed they were once famed for is still very much intact. Although an exhibition match, it is worth remembering these are two of the most feared names in boxing and this will be a real fight, spread over 8 x 2 minute rounds without the use of headgear.

The body may age, but a fighter’s heart will never die. This fight may not go the distance, but it will most definitely be worth the hype; a fight for the ages.
